The Elk Street Park Project
The City of Gloversville, in partnership with Fulton County Center for Regional Growth and the nationally-recognized organization Project Backboard, is committed to the revitalization of Elk Street Park located on East Fulton Street. The goal is to resurface the basketball court and to redesign the community seating area.
Project Backboard is a 501c3 organization whose mission is to renovate public outdoor basketball courts in order to strengthen communities, improve park safety, and inspire multi-generational play. A signature aspect of Project Backboard is finishing the court surface with a vibrant community-generated mural.
At the end of the 2019 school year, five finalists were chosen from designs submitted by Gloversville High School art students. This autumn, the Gloversville community will select one of the five designs to be painted on the restored court. Installation of the design is expected to occur Spring/Summer 2020. A sixth mural, honoring Shauna Beekman and Anthony “Ice” Coger, will be permanently displayed as well.
Voting for the winning court design closed on November 1, 2019. The winning mural design was announced in December 2019 and is by Kaylin Lee. Congratulations Kaylin!
Thank you to all of our finalists!
